I was on the old, original, veryyy close-knit BYC, no longer visit the new BYC but do believe it's a useful resource for beginners....it's just too big to be a family.

As this board (and the others) are a business (they sell ads and get paid for page clicks), 'they' want it to get bigger....it will happen, esp. when this board changes over to the 'new' format.

I wanted a BYH calendar w/ member photos in it.....apparently it wasn't lucrative enough to repeat b/c they wouldn't do one for 2013.

So I won't be buying anything w/ BYH written on it to put money in someone else's pocket, if they don't want to do anything to benefit the membership unless it also benefits them.

There's my 2 cents, for as long as it's here before it gets edited out and disappears....

Let's try to keep the topic of this discussion to BYH merchandise please.

Oh, and the reason that 2013 calendars weren't done is because there are still a TON of 2012 calendars that didn't sell.

I like the idea of the shirts with some type of logo that has a simple logo depicting a small herd of goats, sheep, horses and of course chickens and rabbits. Alot to get a into a simple design but if it could be done that would be neat. That way whatever your backyard herd consists of the logo represents.

What is the merchandise supporting? Are we trying to get more people on BYH? I personally wont be buying anything.. Because I dont wear hats, and I dont like sweatshirts with logos. Plus, quite frankly all my extra money goes towards the animals.

Is the merchandise to support the upkeep to BYH? Not being flip here just trying to understand what is the purpose for the merchandise.

I ask because honestly I already have to spend a lot of $ on my farm logos- t-shirts, collared shirts, jackets, signs etc. and we wear those out to advertise our farm, so I wouldn't really get anything else. :hide

BUT... I would buy a Golden HM if it supports the upkeep. It is worth it to me. I love this forum, and the people that are part of it! Sadly...it's my only form of entertainment. Gosh is that embarrassing or what? :/

We do appreciate the feedback and, as you can imagine, it's hard to please all people all the time. Our job is to listen, take notes, and hopefully make the best decisions for what the community wants. For the most part, I think the teams on all of the sites (BYC, BYH, TEG, SS, etc.) do a great job within the respective communities and their specific needs. We're definitely open to feedback and discussion about BYC, BYH, forum growth, etc., but let's have that on another thread, ok?

Regarding the merchandise: The absolute #1 reason for merchandise: Peeps keep asking for it (personally or publicly). I think if any of you knew how much time and effort were put into designs, ordering, wharehousing, inventory, customer service, shipping, etc. you'd probably wonder why stuff (for example that on BYC) isn't more expensive. We didn't do a BYH calendar this year, not because of financial reasons, but because we just don't have the time and resources to organize and create a calendar for relatively few sales.

Yes, the margin of money made by selling stuff helps to keep the site running and keeps it free for the users. I've saved a bunch of sites from extinction because they didn't have the tools and resources to stay up. www.BackYardChickens.com and www.GoatWeb.com are examples where both sites were dead when I took over... dead as it "404 - page does not exist" kinda dead! My job is to keep the sites running and sustainable and not let them die, and that requires resources.

Yes, we'd love BYH to grow. We can do WAY more good with synergy of many people than we can without it. If BYH was just 5 people all hanging out, I promise it would get pretty lame pretty quick. ;) We hope BYH never looses it's personality. BYH was created separate from BYC because the group and the site have different personalities. The COMMUNITY dictates the personality, which can be maintained at any size.

With all that said, don't worry about BYH turning into BYC... that's not going to happen. If you don't want any BYC stuff, that's totally fine... honestly, the amount of time and work it takes is incredibly daunting (I personally dislike every part of the process), but as I state above, my job is to cater to what the community wants and needs, and the requests for BYH stuff has come in enough times that we thought we should start this thread to get a feel for what y'all want. If the answer is "nope, we're good", then we're fine with that!
