Here is a picture of our little Nutmeg. :)

DSCN0553.jpg

She still won't suck. We did get some Nutri Drench for cattle and gave her some of that. Tried to get her to latch on to mom, but she won't. Spruce does seem to be getting a little bit better about letting her try. So if we can just get Meg to want to suck, then maybe we will be ok. She is just laying there doesn't really want to get up. The Vet tube fed her at 11:00 this morning and said that she would be good for 12 hours. We are getting ready to go out and try and see if we can get her to suck in just a little bit.

We did milk the mom a little and I would put the milk in my hand and open her mouth and pour it in and then put my finger in her mouth to try to get her to suck. She did suck a little bit. We also have a heat lamp in her stall that she is laying under to try and keep her warm. She has been shivering a lot.

She does look tiny! How radical was mom with her? She wasn't kicked or beaten or anything when you weren't looking? If she tried for three hours, baby may have just given up on nursing-- yet she took the bottle of powdered colostrum?
I've seen some cows get very nasty with their calves if they don't want them. It's rare, but happens.
Hopefully the vet checked for physical damage.
Nutmeg just doesn't look happy.

Keep trying. Did the vet show him how to drench her again, if needed? Did the vet give her a through exam? She doesn't look like she's good. I can't put my finger on it though.

Dry nose could also be a sign of dehydration--although she was tubed some today. There is a little discharge in her nose. If the vet gave her an exam he/she should have picked up on it though. I would think any vet worth going to should have done a full exam on that calf.

Her head is also larger than what fits with her body, unless it's the angle of the pic.

What breed is she?
The stresses of the day, might play a role in why she don't look "right".
If she were mine, I would stick with the heat light, and small feedings of moms milk and electrolytes.

24 hours is awfully quick for pneumonia and the vet should have heard that with a checkup, I'd think. If he was tubing, he should have checked lungs.
I'd assumed that white was a milk drop. If it is snot, yes, do something asap and especially take temp.

Question-- did mom clean her and dry her up well? The only issue was feeding?

She is a dexter. The mom did an ok job of cleaning her up. She had her in the back of the field, and we ended up carrying her up to our sheltered area after about 2 hours when them mom wouldn't let her nurse. We took a towel and dried her off the best we could and bottle fed her the colostrum. Then we got her mom back in with her and she started licking her off again. DH said that the Vet did check her lungs when they tubed her. She just seems so week. She has no sucking reflex at all. DH went to try and tube feed her again and couldn't get the tube past her larynx. He said it felt like it was stuck. We have called the Vet and he is going to be here in a little bit. We will have him take her temp when he gets her.

The being weak make me ask, was she early?
Also ask the vet about giving her a shot of selinium.

I have called the lady we bought them from last year to see when she put them together, she is checking her records and is going to call me back. I can't remember the date she told me. I have July 10th in my mind as the date that the bull was put in with them, but not sure if that is correct or not. So I guess that means she could be about a week early???
