Calf weaning

Hi all,

I am picking up 2 calves that are Angus/Galloway cross. 4.5 and 3.5 mo old bulls. The people are moving and need to get them out of there. They are on the cow now so I don't think they will take a bottle. both eating hay and grain. Any tips for weaning and how long before I call the vet to castrate them.

I would band them immediately if that's your plans with them. They should have been done months ago. Personally I would give them a fair bit of grain the first month until you see them eating enough hay. We wean our bottle calves at that age. They can be pretty ravenous the first week or two so I just give free choice grain.

If they are on a cow then I would wait til they are 7months and then wean then at around 5 days before the new moon. Less squalling from everyone at that point

Update, They both did just fine, not a peep out of them (no crying). Vet came out and castrated them, they were to old to band, been a week sense the vet and both are eating good and doing great.
