Can you use fake grass in a rabbit colony?

Hi back with a new question. So I’ve taken everything into consideration and have decided to colony raise my rabbits. Well only my does. So I’m using a 12’ x 9.5’ space, using metal around the bottom to keep the bunnies in and horse or hog panel on the top to keep any predators out and a metal roof. So I’m going to use wire on the ground so no matter what they can’t dig out. I want to litter box train them but I know it’s hard for them to all be %100 litter trained so I need something I can take out and hose down and that will also drain the pee. And I don’t really want them on the dirt or in soiled bedding. So I was thinking fake grass/turf. Let me know if y’all think this would work and If anyone had any tips for me that would be great. No. Rabbits gnaw and chew things up. Best case, they would chew the fake grass to bits. Worst case one or more would eat it, either choke on it or die of impacted intestines.

Ok. Do you know of an alternative? Also I’m going to give them plenty of chew toys and a really large litter box, hide houses, climbing toys, and plenty of Timothy hay. I just want to keep them clean and on a smooth/level surface.

Rabbits dig. That’s what they do. Just because you want it level and smooth doesn’t mean they do. Be careful of putting anything on the ground for reasons already said.

Like Baymule said, definitely not fake grass, they’ll chew it and it would be hard to get really clean. Best would be a concrete or tile floor, but it looks like you are setting them up outside? How many are we talking about? I would use bedding - just clean it out regularly and it won’t be dirty… They will spill and drag their hay around anyway. Why are you against bedding? Or just nothing - if you use litterboxes and they are not crowded. (I had a Netherland Dwarf buck as a kid who was not interested in digging or eating grass (he loved the mixed weeds we brought him though) and I had to mow his enclosure because the grass got too tall…. until I got a guinea pig and he took care of it in short order and nothing in there ever had a chance of growing more than a quarter inch. )

If you are planning to have your rabbits live in a colony, dig the entire area up about 24" deep. Lay down wire, then put all the dirt back and tamp it down. Rabbits dig and can dig burrows in the ground then will dig up in a different soot for an emergency exit. That exit might be outside the pen. Bye Bye Bunny.

If you can divide the pen in half, or build a second one, you can spread grass and field flower seed in one then transfer them to the growing pen and seed the other. Kind of like rotational grazing.
