I watched a video a few days ago where a lady was canning whole birds. She gets a bunch of 2-3lb birds from a grower. She stuffed them whole into 1/2 gal jars with carrots, onion & celery.
Looked cool enough.... but I couldn't figure what she would do with it later. Maybe strain to be broth & pick what meat she could out of the bones??

Looks like I might join yall with a temp hoop house build soon.

Edited to correct the 'while's to 'whole's.

I ferment the feed with buttermilk starting when they are 3-4 weeks old. Let’s face it, CCX meat is bland. My son in law says store bought chicken isn’t as good as mine. The buttermilk adds some flavor.

By all means, get some meat chicks. Don’t overload yourself, but try some. One thing I know, the meat I raise is clean, I’m constantly washing chicken as I process it. I vacuum seal all of it. I part it out for meals. I remember the working days when I’d get home and have to throw supper together.

The storm lasted about 12hrs, finishing up around midnight. I haven't gone out to measure (it's still dark) but from the porch rails it looks to be about 3".
The plant canceled night shift. Another night off - whoot 🎉
... but a whole night's pay gone. I'm thankful that I put all that effort into those extra days & OT. I don't know yet if we're working tonight, but if we are, I'm scheduled for 2 more extra shifts over the weekend they'll more than make up for missing shifts.
My friend left work yesterday around 3 & said the roads were TERRIBLE. She lives about 15mins down the road from me. The commute is usually about 20mins, it took her nearly an hour to get home. I'm hoping that over night & all day today they will get the main roads & highways in good shape.
@Mini Horses , @farmerjan & @Finnie , I've been worrying about yall. What we got is mostly a fine powdery, but very packable snow. How did yall do?

The sun will be up soon & I can go check on Eva & the chickens.

Thanks for the concern. Our snow was about 3 inches... it was light and dry so not bad. The worst was the roads where they had been salting it so some thawing and making it actually more slick. Then they at least did plow some of it off and they were mostly clear by late afternoon. I was getting around fine with the forester... it goes good in the snow.
It is snowing again this morning, then supposed to get frigid dangerous wind chills... it is only 18 out there now.. Weatherman said we are 20-25 degrees BELOW normal for this time of year... Actually, it is kinda good to get some of this really cold temps... might kill some bugs/ticks and germs....
It is snowing quite steady, forecast said only 1/2 to 1 inch and it has gone past that already. Supposed to stop in another hour...
Then warming up over the weekend and into the 50-60's early next week????? CRAZY....

I woke up about 5:30, 18° but it's warming up. There's about an inch of sleet and ice on the ground here, ice covering everything. I was pleased that the ground wasn't noticeably slippery to walk on.
