Can't get Smilies to work?

Ok, I'm doing something wrong and I don't know what - I can't get the Smiley's to show up Or, since one actually worked, I can't get them to work most of the time Ok, two of three have worked, naturally since I decided to ask about it Alright, two of four have worked - what's up

It looks to me like you do not have a space between the smilie and the other words. They must have a space. Like that. Not like this
