That makes alot more sense. The bald faced hornets do "catch" and eat flies... I have seen them do it...when flies are sluggish when it gets a little chillier, I have seen the hornets go along and grab them off the side of a wall, where they were gathering to get warmed up.... so it was actually doing the cow a favor and until you could see it up close, you just didn't know. No harm in that.
Colliodal silver might work.. the alum spray will coat it and protect from dirt...
Personally, I would just fly spray it to keep them from irritating it.... and see if it would dry up.... you are right, it is not where you would think there was alot of "rubbing together" irritation.... It could have come from a fly bite that oozed a little, and flies will "flock" to that sort of "sore"....
Try some Avon skin so soft.... helps to repel flies and works to heal things like that on people..... sure isn't going to hurt her.
