I am looking to buy a farm and there is one I found that has 9 acres of pasture on it. I do know about animals and cattle and such but just have not "grown" any. My question is how many head of cattle can I put on 9 acres in the summertime when the grass is good. Hay is another thing I guess towards fall and winter if I winter them over or sell before then. Thank you...

It all depends on your location. Some places where rainfall is plentiful can run one cow/calf pair per acre. Other very dry places require up to 30 acres per C/C pair. Here in NESD we figure about 3 - 4 acres per pair.

@sophiemae we currently have 8 cows on a 5 acre pasture. We have 10 acres total and rotate them from field to field. We are in BC Canada and we have just run out of grass now. We have rain all the time although this summer it has been really dry so we are out of grass a little early. We get a good feed for 8 cows on a pasture for about 6 months of the year. We are just starting to give them hay now.
It all depends how much hay you want to feed them. I have heard of people doing 100 on 10 acres. For our 10 acres I think we would be comfortable with 10-15.
