One of my neighbors had a small herd of Galloways. They were extremely wild, and would run away when we opened the door on our house. They also were "fence crawlers", and would be out on the road a lot. One of my Sim/Angus cows accidentally got bred to his bull, and the calf weighed about 150 lbs less than the calves from my bulls. Granted, it was about a month younger, but 150 lbs?

I'm sure that there are gentle Galloways somewhere, and these are the only ones that I have seen. JMHO

They are: Chianina and Salers and their crosses. Charolais very narrowly missed being on that nasty list.
Chianinas make amazing oxen though! They're so beautiful to see worked. :)

Oh sounds cool! You don't happen to have any photos do you? :)
I'm trying to talk my husband into a hereford 6 year old cow that is running with a pure hereford bull and she has a 5 month old steer by her side... All are pulled or hornless... I just want the cow and steer.... We most likely will wait till octoberish and get some calves but this looks like a good deal and they look really healthy.

That's perfect!! :D All you need to do is to wean the calf a month or two from now, and raise him, along with another weanling calf for your freezer. Which, I'm sure, is what you had in mind. :)

Oh yes Galloways will get out as the grass is always greener eh but that goes for most cattle if the fence aint up to the job of keeping them in.
I have seen the odd snorty head shaking Galloway and one or two flighty ones when out looking to purchase our herd but most were nice natured and a credit to the sellers.
Duramaxgirl - Herefords are great if thats what you choose - We had a H bull running with our dairy herd back in England for 13 years, his name was Bo and what a fantastic bull he was

Hello everyone! I'm new to cows but we are planning on getting some very soon. I'm so glad to be here!! Here's what I have; 5 acres, a pole barn that we are adding a 8x24 3 sided lean to on for the cows. My 5 acres has mostly orchard grass and timothy very little weeds. We have about 2 acres or less fenced in but plan on doing eclectic fencing on the rest soon. I also have a father that used to have 400+ head of cows when he was young. He has lots of experience.
Soooo I have no cattle experience at all. I have 4 kids aged 7,6,4 and 3. We want beef cows for meat and one heifer for breeding/pet. For a total of 3 cows. I want a kid friendly cow if possible. My dad said his tamest cows where charolais. But I'm reading that charolais are kinda skidish... We are planning to get young or even bottle fed calves.

So who has charolais and what do you like/dislike about them?
Thanks an sorry for the long post :)
