Hi there. I am newer to milk goats. I've had pygmies, but not for milk. I just got my first 2 nigerian dwarves for milking this year. I am really interested in learning to make cheese with goats' milk. Does anyone know any place in Michigan that offers classes on this? Not MSU- I saw they are offering a 3 day seminar, but I can't take 3 days, nor can I spend the 100s of dollars. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One thing you can do.... In the search section at the top type in "goat cheese" there is a great post there for a simple, easy goat cheese. In fact, I made it today!!!!! I only used one quart of fresh goats milk. I got a small amount of cheese, but boy was it nice.... I flavored it with salt, chives, dill and parsley.

Also, google "goat cheese recipes" and see what you get.

I personally love "queso" a form of Spanish cheese, I love the "Ranchero" brand. The goat cheese I made today is very similar to it.

I'm clearly late to the game here, and perhaps you've already located a class, but we took one over Valentine's Day weekend at a farm in North Branch, MI. Not sure if that is a viable option for you or not - but you can contact Melissa at mejay57@aol.com and see if she has any upcoming cheese-making classes. :)

Hope this helps!

I think there's also a woman in Millington that does classes. The author of "Goats Produce Too!" is about an hour south of me in Coleman, northwest of Midland.

If you're near Standish or West Branch, stop on up, me and Saaga-Togg will learn ya! :D

There is a woman south of Grand Rapids, Barbara Jenesses - I believe that is her last name, who gives classes. Last fall I attended an all-day class (for about $80) that included a great lunch, cheese sampling, hands-on experience, and a chance to observe (up-close and personal, smells gratis) the milking, plus she will answer all your newbie questions. Barb is a font of information. Sorry that I cannot find her phone number. She owns Dancing Goat Creamery, so just Google that, and you will find her. I recommend this class (or any of hers for that matter) to give you a confidence boost and also to meet-up with other like-minded cheese aficionados. And, who better to learn from than the woman who supplies lots of popular, local restaurants with their cheese?
