The local food store now carries goat meat. But OMG, the prices! The lowest cost is about $9.95/lb. I think I spied some top cuts at more than $23/lb! :ep

Making me want to sell chevon out here.

Chevon is the French word for goat meat, cabrito is the Spanish word. Most markets will use one or the other to market to Americans.

Yes, goat is very expensive. Last I checked the hanging weight in Chicago was around $10 per pound. That was a few years ago. Most is imported frozen "chunks" , they just cut it up into random pieces.

We get $1.50-$2.50 / pound live weight at the local graded goat auction. The buyers there take it to New Holland Pennsylvania where it is sold again, at a mark up and then it goes to the slaughterhouses in New Jersey or Chicago to sell there, again at a mark up.

If you can find a way to market either directly to the consumer or at least through a slaughterhouse to the store, you may be able to do well. The difficulty with both of these is you need a regular supply which means a lot of goats.
