Does anyone here raise chinchillas along with their rabbits (not necessarily together, but in separate cages)? They've always intrigued me and I know many countries raise them for meat. I know they're not as efficient in meat production as rabbits, but just out of pure curiosity...

I was thinking the very same thing recently. I used to have a pet chin many years ago. Quite an interesting creature, I liked how he grabbed food with his front paws. Come in many colors, thought they had a big following back then, but not sure now. I wonder how they'd do outside. Their pelts may be softer than rabbit.....?

I think you could have rabbits and chincillas together but not in the same cage. Chincillas are neat animals. Love to see them roll in the dust to take a dust bath.

BTW, never raised chinicillas. Only did some light research. But they are interesting creatures with really, really soft fur. I think their fur is regulated by some industry or the government. Not really sure. But I would look into it if your interests lead you to raising chincillas for fur.

We have actually killed a few wild ones on our little farm. Not sure where they came from but had a time getting rid of them. They have a specific smell, we could always tell when we had them in the barn, plus all the poops laying around. They would do fine outside, we have -0 temps in the winter, didn't seem to bother them at all. I thought they looked like a monster large rat/mouse with really super soft fur. Rather interesting for sure.
