Hello everyone. We've had an outbreak of coccidosis last week. I drenched all the little goaties with CoRid and Neomyicin (if needed). They had the CoRid drench for 5 days now. But what do I do from here? Our vet charges $75 per sample to check the stool for the coccidosis, and we have 5 goats.....I will not pay that much for someone to look at poop. :th Do I beging a 21 day preventitive with their drinking water? Thanks for your help

I would wait 21 days and then put a 5 day treatment in their drinking water. I just finished up our 2nd round of Coccidiosis medicine for the spring, 5 days on 28 days off is what we do. We didn't quite make it the full 28 days, before we suspected that we needed to go ahead and start the treatment.

I put 2 ounces of corid per 5 gallons of water, when I use corid. I make sure it is their only source of water, and I will treat a few by hand, if I am worried they aren't getting enough in the drinking source. This spiring we are using Sulfa-dimethoxine 12.5%.

You could also consider feeding a medicated goat feed, that does help slow it down.

How old are you goats?

yeah, I couldnt believe it when I called and told them what I needed, and they said $75! I think I had a cow! :) :bun

I just ordered some Di-methox 12% (powder form) the other day offline. So I can start that in their drinking water in 21 days. We've also done a through cleaning of their feed trough, bedding, and pen today, so that should help.

We have 2 -1 year old weathers, and 3-3month old kids. ( 2 weathers and one doe).

x3!!! Ours does them for free given all the business we give him on other things. Might want to spend that on a microscope and do it yourself next time.

The powder should do the trick. We used it this year instead of getting the liquid which is more expensive. Had a math buddy and RollsFarm help me figure out the concentration of water to add to make the 40% and just hae it in a glass jar in the fridge.

WHOA! $75 for a fecal IS robbery...

You can always collect and send your own in to:

http://www.midamericaagresearch.net/instructions.php

It's $5 a sample, they email you clear easy results, do all kinds of livestock besides goats, and if you use the medium size priority box to mail it at the USPS it's like $12 to send it in....thus saving a trip to a vet and such :) For us since we live so far from the vet, and the post office is closer to me, it saves a TON of gas money driving to the vet, and frees her office up since she's pretty busy out on farm calls a ton. I think all in all it took like 3 days last time to collect and send, have it arrive, and get a result in my in-box...just another option if you don't have any other vet offices close :) (PLUS this...one time I asked DH to stop at the post office....he used FROZEN CHICKEN SOUP INSTEAD OF WATER BOTTLES and they STILL didn't laugh at me at the lab! They did call to tell me I wasn't getting the soup back...and I could have KILLED DH for that!)

Just tossing another option out there...I'm too near sighted to try and chance using a microscope on my own, or I would learn how, so I stick with others doing my "poo work" :)
