Anyone out there involved in a cow share or goat share program? Care to tell me a bit about it? I hope to hear from both sides, both the farmer and the consumer.
I went back to look for info as I am considering offering goat shares and the site was gone! Can anyone help me find some good info on cow or goat share contracts and how they work, with specifics? I know the general way they work, but am hoping to find more specific info. Thanks!
The people who own the farm are very laid back about things and want to provide the community with raw, non-homogenized milk. Depending on our share, we can get from 1.25 to 5 gallons a week. We must provide our own containers but we can get it ourselves out of the bulk tanks. Some times are off limits due to milk pickups (they used to sell to Organic Valley but now sell to a different company that makes cheese in Kalkaska, MI). One of the cowhsare members has 100+ ISA Brown hens so he sells his eggs through them. I have my own chickens so I don't need to.
We place our money in a strong box and write down how much we take (per our contract) and write down what we pay. They also offer beef although we went in with another family to buy a quarter beef (farm owners kept half, 1/4 for themselves, 1/4 to sell to shareholders, another family got 1/4 and we took the last one). The beef is excellent, from a 3 yr old Holstein/Jersey steer raised on grass. Our Quarter was 290lbs!
They also allow me to take an extra gallon or so whenever I want to in order to make cheese, under the condition that they get to sample some of it They do something similar with a woman who makes yogurt.
I'm very happy with it. I love having milk I can skim cream off to make butter or use the non-homogenized to make cheese. My daughter always likes to pet the calves in the summer and fall or watch the cows being milked when we go get our stuff.
