If you do have to cut a cord, on anything......cavles, pups, kittens, goats, even humans.......leave an inch or so on cord still attached to the belly. Cords that are cut very short are more prone to infection.

And I agree, dont cut the cord unless you absolutly have to (and then take a serated or dull knife and saw it a little, this shreds the edges much like a mothers teeth would do when they chew the cord, it helps prevent bleeding and makes for smaller openings in the end...less room for cooties to get in)

What is a good "dip" to use? You guys say iodine? On the FiasCoFarm Website she says to use "7% Iodine". Where can I find this?

We have never cut an umbilical cord. If we need to sever or shorten it just grab the cord in both hands at the length you want and pull it apart. This severs it in the same way as mom would do when she gets up without pulling on the babies navel. We then use this on the navel stump which is usually about 2" to 3" long.
If you don't like iodine this http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=e8a12bc9-e5f6-44a0-99f4-cb9984cd30a0&gas=navel works well too. Unfortunately if it's like the rest of their products it can't be left out in the barn becuase if it freezes it is no longer effective.

the one an only time I used dental floss (unflavored kind) I had a kid come down with naval ill... recovered thankfully but I have just let cords break naturally.. dip in iodine asap and let mom keep kid cleaned up.. never had one bleed.. and if they are too long after a dip I nip it down with clean iodized scissors and then redip naval/cord.. no issues in the other times I did not use tying

You really should use 7% iodone (or triodine, as it's now called). Betadine isn't strong enough, and you really want to get the strong stuff to dip cords...kills germs and really helps the cord dry up quickly. Navel ill/joint ill is no fun, and is easily preventable if you dip the cords. :) You should be able to find it at any livestock supply store or even pharmacy.
