Hello everyone,
So I bought a alpine doe back in May. She was a bottle baby (I bought her at a month old). So I was bottle feeding her until she was 7weeks old. (has to wean early due to our fairs not allowing goat to be bottle fed while at the fair grounds).
anyways we have her on a coccidia prevention ( totrazuril ).
She isn’t growing like she should. Also her coat is not like the other goats coat. So i tried to give one capsule of copper to her ( was a month ago and no change ). Right now she is about 40-45lbs and she is 6 months old. Idk if its because I’m used to kids growing big and fast or mabye she really is behind.
She is the only alpine doeling we have because we has all bucks this year so i can’t compare her to the bucks because they grow fast anyways. Any input Is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to BYH! Would it be possible to post some pictures of your doeling? How is her coat different from your experience. I gather you have other Alpines and they are bucks, yes?

When you gave her a copper bolus did it go down intact or did she chew it. If she chewed the bolus then the copper may not have gotten into the correct stomach for absorption. It can be difficult for one person to bolus a goat. I'm sure I'd be squirming if someone was trying to shove something down my throat.

I raise Nigerians and there can be differences in the coats among all the does. Some are slick and silky and a couple are more coarse, with a crimp in the hair... may or may not mean anything. Some of my does grow faster than others.

Anyway, I'm glad you found us and I'm sure you will receive more useful answers.

What's your doeling's name? And, you do us all a favor if you put your general location on your profile. We don't want your home address, but if we knew your state it would be helpful with any advise we give. Something that works for me in Texas may not be the thing to do where you are. Please and thank you.

You might want to run fecal to make sure she doesn’t have any parasites. 7 weeks is pretty early to wean, but wouldn’t necessarily cause this. Then again it could, so keep it in the back of your mind. Some lines are extremely slow growing, and it could be a combination of things too. Do you have a picture of her, especially in which she is compared to your other goats?
