Dam Raised, Bottle Raised, Trough Raised, & Pulling Kids - Our Experience with different methods of raising kids

Dam Raised, Bottle Raised, Trough Raised, & Pulling Kids at different times

First, let me say we have always been very strong supporters of “nature's way” wanting our does to dam raise their kids. This allows us to see how good of a mother they are which is very important to us.
I never thought there would be a time where we would even consider “pulling” ( taking the kid at birth from mom) a kid. I do remember asking "Rolls" why she pulled all her kids, she gave a great answer...

I'd never heard of "trough raised" but I've done it, just on a colt not a kid! We purchased a "wild pony" at the Chincoteague Wild Pony roundup back in 1987, and the colt was clearly only a few days old. He came with a bag of replacement milk mix and one of those buckets with a giant cow sized teat sticking out of the bottom. Why buy one that young? He was in the price range and my little sister and parent were with us and she was set on having one! And we'd hauled that empty horse trailer down all the way from Ohio...

We took "SandPiper" back to the camp grounds and I mixed up the formula in the shower house. As I worked with a bucket and the formula and the colt struggled with his halter and cried from his dam, my dad, an old dairy farmer said "let me show you a trick" and after getting the colt to "latch" on his thumb, slowly lowered it into the bucket. Wow did that make things easier!!

That is how we do it too! Just one thing... does are smarter and pick it up quick... bucklings... rocks in their heads! :\

I will need to update soon and share where we are so far... :hide

Funny, I can get a buckling who has been dam raised for a month to take a bottle.
Does on the other hand are as stubborn as a mule.:)

Really? I'm shocked! Here the bucklings are so crazy and end up spilling milk all over and biting the heck out of you until you force them to drink :barnie:thAfter a few days its better though.

The doelings have always been easy :idunno

Because I'm getting older and use a cane, I'm curious whether the trough fed kids would be less inclined to climb up on you than the bottle fed kids.
