Not mine....my son's dog. He has this huge powerful scardy-cat pit bull that freaks out when it's storming and runs away. He usually comes to my house. He has torn up fences in the past, mated my pit bull when she was in heat (he's a pit bull too so that wasn't a huge problem). He can rip right through chain link and breaks heavy chains when he gets scared of storms. But he hasn't killed anything, until today. Well, last night a thunder storm rolled through and Chief made a break for it. He came down here and decided to kill all of my new Speckled Sussex Chickens that I had just picked up a week before. This was my 3rd attempt at Speckled Sussex. The first ones I bough were not pure...they were a mix. The 2nd ones I got had a respiratory virus so I euthanized them. These last ones were 18 weeks old and stunning. And now they are dead. They were in a strongly built quarantine pen and the dog forced his way in and killed them all. I don't know where the last two bodies are....hopefully on my son's front porch. This is the last straw. I am telling my son tonight if I see that dog down here again he gets a bullet in the head. I am just SO mad and heart broken for these poor chickens. They didn't deserve to die like this.

I wish My pit bull was on the porch last night....she could have alerted us to his being there. She is scared of storms too though, so she was in our bedroom snoring.

I'd also send him a bill for the chickens! Family or not, he's responsible for the dog, and if the dog killed them he needs to pay for them.

Oh yeah...he WILL pay me for my lost chickens and the gas it took to go get them. He will also pay me for the koi food that dog stole AGAIN. That stuff is expensive and I am tired of the dog stealing it. He has caused me so many problem over the years but I overlooked it to keep peace in the family. Well, not this time. Spoke to my son this morning. He is getting tired of dealing eith this destructive dog too and this may have been the last straw for him as well. He says the dog will either get a new home or a bullet this weekend. I sincerely hope he can get the dog a home, but I doubt it will happen. Who on earth would want a 100 pound dog that can't be contained? Chain link...goes right through it. If he is chained, he spins in circles until the chain knots up and finally breaks or the collar breaks. He thought about putting up invisible fencing but I don't think that would even slow him down. He is good with kids and other dogs, but freaks out when it storms and becomes the most unmanagable dog I have ever seen. I am just so scared it will be my sheep next.

:hugs I am sorry for your loss.

I hope the situation is resolved. I just do not see a good outcome for this scenario. :hit

that's the really sad part...there is no good outcome. Either the dog goes (one way or the other) and my son will probably be mad at me for a while or my sheep and chickens will be in constant danger of death. And I will have to sleep with one eye open. Neither option is good. :(

I hate to sound mean but it's your son's fault. The dog should have been neutered and TRAINED, especially because it's a pit! Why get a high maintenance breed if you're not going to train it? Now the dog has to suffer because of it. A shame. :/

I agree with you. I told him years ago to get the dog neutered but he wouldn't do it. My son is an adult....I can't MAKE him do anything. Neutering might have made him more docile but would not have made him any less likely to kill livestock. At any rate, I agree...it is a shame.

Yep, you're right. (And the neutering was more for a dog that escapes...and will breed other dogs :p).

It's just sucky that your poor chickens are gone. :hugs :hugs

Sorry for your loos. Situations like this are tough, especially when family is involved. I hope you get things resolved quickly! We are very careful about containing and controlling our dogs. Would hate to be responsible for an incident like this!
