Need a little help here, as we have had a couple kids born from a doe we took in on a rescue basis a few weeks ago ...

I came out yesterday morning to find her with 2 adorable kids. I had no idea she was pregnant.

The smallest kid, a pygmy doeling, has a bit of diarrhea. She's up and moving about, and seems to be feeding, but she's having loose, yellow-ish stools. Not total water, but definitely not normal stools. The other kid, a buckling, has no loose stools.

After scouring the internet for information, and searching the forums here, I've come across opinions that range from I should be really concerned to it's normal for day old kids to have loose stools.

Any information would be GREATLY appreciated, as I am woefully unprepared for this.

Thanks-
Em

Yellow is normal and means she is nursing. She is too young for parasites so no worries there-it takes weeks for those develop. I have had kids whose poo was fairly firm and other pretty lose. If it is soft but not watery, I wouldn't be too worried. Now in three weeks, I would recommend doing some coccidia prevention treatment with DiMethox. Coccidia can cause scours, damage the digestive system, and are very common. You cannot get DiMethox at TSC but can order it online from Jeffers.com (liquid or powdered form) and it works, in my opinion, worlds better than other treatments.

Congrats on your new goats and I hope we will get to see some pics soon---we love to look at other people's goats

That's the colostrum poop. That is good an normal. It will be a bit 'wet' and may be a little loose. That is a good sign and shows that she is getting the mom's colostrum. It should continue for the first few days.

I normally will give them a day if they are acting normal, but then if it is still really runny I will give them a couple cc's of Spectam scour Halt/gaurd for pigs, twice a day, until scours(runny poop) clear up. This is for bacterial scours. Maybe start them on penn G shots if they really start to look weak and I always give a newborn baking soda if they stop nursing. Baking soda wont hurt, but it can really help.

Have you had a fecal done on the mom? I would just to see what her egg count and type looks like. As far as the kid, thats normal. It should firm up in a few days. A good deal can be learned from mom though.

Well, thanks for all the replies. I feel much better and the kids are just doing great. They're a lot more active today, just playing and bouncing around.

Here's some pics:

My little girl holding Lily, the doe.

And with Racer, the buck.

As you can see, the buck is almost twice the size of the little doe. I was worried about her, but she's gaining weight and doing great.

Momma is doing well, although we've never had a fecal done on her. It's something I guess we should have done.

Thanks again for all the replies. You helped this nervous new goat mommy feel better.

Blessings-
Em
