My new buckling, now ten weeks old, just got an emergency dose of Ivomec, orally, 1 cc. Hope this is right, there is so much conflicting information out there.

He suddenly got lethargic on me today and I ran a fecal as soon as I got home from work. He was LOADED with barberpole!!! So I grabbed dh and a flashlight and the Ivomec, along with some B vitamins and some antioxidants and out we went in the rain, after 10 PM. I felt a strange need to RUN.

He was LOADED.

I haven't had a serious problem here, ever. Had goats on this property for 7-8 years now. Glad I quarantined him. Is my pen now hopelessy infected?

Hope he makes it ok. Follow-up advice?

If the Ivomec doesn't work, try Cydectin. I'm not sure of the dosage but I'm sure someone on here will know. Maybe give him some red cell too. I hope he does ok for you. :hugs

Regardless of whether you think you rpen is infeected or not, I would be shovelling alot of it out. Just as a safety precaution.

Goodluck!

Yeah, I think I'll bag his poo and put it in the trash. Good thing he's a little guy and has only been here a few days. I'll bag up his bedding, too, once he shows me a good fecal. Although it may be silly....it only takes one worm to make a million...but I will feel better doing it.

I was in the same situation as you are this week. Had fecals done and 2 of my goats had heavy barberpole. All had cocci.

I use Cydectin Sheep drench. My vet said l % l/2 cc per 11 lbs of goat. ONE TIME DOSEAGE.

Roll Farms says that she uses the Cydectin Injectible, because you use much less of it, 1cc per 75# of goat.

She also said she treats her kids for cocci every 21 days until first hard frost.

I gave them the last of the cocci med: Dimethox 40% this am. Thank goodness, they absolutely hate it.

I'm going to have the vet do a followup fecal in two weeks.

Usually 2 weeks after the last dose of medication/wormer. But since you do it yourself, you could always see if the meds killed off a bunch right away and then do it again in a couple weeks to see they stay away.

How fast is the effectiveness? I don't want to freak myself out by looking too soon, and thinking he is still infested when in reality he is still shedding dead worms and eggs.

If you wait the 2 weeks, then it should give you a better idea. I would wait a few days and then see how it is being effective but don't freak until the 2 week mark.

Good plan. He was up and about this morning, and poppin' around and being obnoxious when I went into his pen this evening. Very interested in food and me again. Whew. Inner eyelids still a bit too pale, but hey, it hasn't been 24 hours since worming so I suppose I should give him a little time to build up some blood! Poo is already not dog poo, but back to clumps of pellets. Progress!
