No im not lol.....next year that should be our cost for a 250lb pig. But we will be planting our own crops and having them milled. This year we did shell corn and oats but colored beans didnt do well enough to use for our feed so we are lacking the protein content we need. We will still have the oats and corn milled which will drop our feed costs further then they are now but not as much as our final goal.

Same pen, same conditions, and brother to your boar and being a low taint breed to boot, not raising in confinement odds are very very high he has no taint. Like i said the study found less then 10% with taint detectable to humans and that was in a confinement...basically the riskiest way to raise a pig as far as Skatole taint.

Age is more important then weight for detecting Androstenone taint....meaning whether the boar is sexually mature or not. We have seen boars who are 300lbs by 6 months old and boars who are 8 months old and barely 250lbs. Also everyone is on and on about sexually maturity making them have taint...boars are able to impregnant at as young as 4 months old yet most people dont allow their boars to breed until 7-8months old...so where exactly is that line where "tainit" kicks in?? Thats why myself and many others dont go by size or age...we just go by smell and do the things we know cut down on the chance of taint.

I think that the boar that they ate was brother to the gilts, not the boar that they are using as a breeder.

The hog we ate was castrated and he was the gilts siblings, not related to our current boar.

Now for a couple pics I took today. The one further along has dropped and her vulva is all swollen and she seems to be leaking a clear fluid. I'd birth imminent??

Nipples are starting to point out so should be any day now. When our gilts are all pointing out it usually 3-4 days until piglets are born.

Ok, thank you. I guess my estimate of when they are due was off. I saw them mating so I counted 114 days on the calendar from the mating that I witnessed.
I'm so nervous about these first litters. We both work outside the home full time so The chances of them delivering when we're not home is high. I really don't eat to come home to a bunch of dead piggies.

You guys have been great. I really appreciate all your feedback.

They could go til your original dates of 22-24....all the teats are not pointing out yer in the pic least doesnt look like it..only seems the back ones are so far. If you saw them breed and know the dates that is always way better then trying to watch the teats and guess lol. Keep in mind though they can farrow anywhere from day 112 to 116.

I recounted and the 22 is 114 days, and the 24 is 3 months, 3 weeks and the 3 days. I never saw the other one mate so I didn't try to guess her due date. I just figured about a week or so later.

114 days is 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days :hugs

The rule of 3's is using the 30 days per month "standard"...but as i mentioned she can go from day 112-116. So just keep an eye on her from 20th(112) to 24th(116) :fl
