Thought I'd put my 2 cents in on this one...

I didn't want electric fencing at first, but when the darn goats found every hole and space they could I gave up...

I had regular goat fencing, but the goat yard is rocky/swampy terrain with a stream running through it, so I got a nice DC charger from TSC and ran only 2 wires around the fence, one about 8" off the ground and another 4' high. I am in no way an expert on anything, but I'd say I picked the right materials because even running through swamp, weeds and trees the fencing is still shocking anyone (even my poor grandmother who just didn't listen to me) who dares to challenge the fence.

On a side note, is it bad for a kid to get zapped by the fence with 5000+ volts? It hasn't happened yet, but I'm afraid what will happen when/if it does.

Depending on the type of kid you're talking about, they'll either go "MAAAAAAAAAA!" or "MAAAAAAAAAAAMA!"...but neither will be worse for wear.

:yuckyuck LMBO :gig

I heard the second cry last fall when I was putting the darn thing together. Got to say I felt pretty badly for doing nothing but laugh! "See.....I told you so...."

My grandmother on the other hand.... :old (minus the beard!) and I said "See....I told you so...."

Of course I then had to turn the tides on myself as I was on my hands and knees fixing a part of the fence...and forgot to turn the 'lectric part off...

"See....I told you so..."

We too a few days ago just got a electric fencer, wire & posts for our electric fence we'll be installing. TSC has electric voltage testers to test how much volts your fence is outputting. We'll be using ours before we let anyone into ours when it's all put up to check the volts.

TSC has a guide on Voltage Recommendations by Species:

Bison/Deer 4,000-5,000 volts
Wolves/Predators 4,000-5,000 volts
Sheep/Goats 4,000-5,000 volts
Exotics (Llama & Alpaca) 4,000-5,000 volts
Bulls 3,000-4,000 volts
Cows 2,000-3,000 volts
Horses 2,000-3,000 volts
Poultry 2,000-3,000 volts
Pigs 1,000-2,000 volts
Nuisance Pests 1,000-2,000 volts
Pets 700-1,000 volts

Although it depends on the animal & spacing of the fencing. We know of someone what had hard to confine goats (full size goats) that uses a fencer in the recommended 4,000-5,000 volt range with 3 strands of wire that works fine to confine his herd. We like the versatility of electric to be able to easily add pasture or take down a previous pasture with ease. Much easier to put up verses wooden fence posts. Of course we have a fenced in pasture that is regular permanent fencing, but it's nice to add extra large pasture area & change the areas as needed. ;)

That is the one I plan on getting. Which charger did you get with it? Did you get the 42" height?

Wow, we are getting nigis so the bottom strand is going to go about 4 or 5 inches. Does that sound about right?
