I will say that when I first got started, I had a wether and a doe and never planned to breed or milk. Then I started thinking about it. I got one doe (A grade Nubian) who freshened last year for the first time. Se was easy on me as she had an unattended birth and raised her twins on her on. It gave me the confidence to take the next step and now have does to kid this spring and have a boer and nubian buck. I bottle raised my Nubian, just two months old now and have a 2 week old lamancha bottle baby.

I would definitely not be frightened, but I would use caution, buy good animals, make sure they have been tested for CAE and CL and have a goat vet or goat mentor near by. I think this is the best part.

And of course, you have BYH who has some amazing persons to give you advice.

I would say that if you've never had pets or livestock, then goats might be a bit of a commitment. I don't find them that hard, but I've had a kennel full of sled dogs, a barn full of chickens, horses, llamas, dogs, cats, geese, turkeys, ducks...well, you get the picture.

Goats do take some time and care. I've adopted a goat who got through fences who does great at my home. Understand that you must have a good fence and care for the goats every day and it probably won't be bad. :idunno

yes you have to be commited, every morning rain, snow, sleet, and hot weather I'm out there, feeding filling up hay racks, checking butts, eyes hoofs. twice a day milking, yes it's work but very rewarding and I love my animals, it's not a part time job. and as far as fencing, it depends on your breed, we have regular rolled fence and cattle fencing I have Nubians and no-ones every tried to jump out, or tear up the fencing. there's somedays when I look out I really don't want to go, but that isn't an option. so yes do all your reading up on them and decide which breed is best for you and I believe you'll be happy with the results.

I have 2 Pygmies, 2 ND, and 1 Nubian. They are a hoot and fun to play with.
Fiona my Nubian is the biggest love bug of them all.
NDs can produce as much as a large goat for milk, however, they do have smaller teats which can be challenging for a big handed person to milk.
But, with the variaty of milk machines this really is not that big of an issue.

It will really boil down to what works for your family, what breed you are drawn to.

Just remember to post pics of your first goats to show em' off. We are all goat friendly folks here.
