Sorry to here about your beloved goat, miohippus. When I get my goats they will be babies and I won't be able to put any weight on them until they are 3 years of age. Plenty of time to get them use to all the rest of the teachings.

I would love my goats (when I get them) to be pack goats too. I have a Oberhasli pair coming and I hear they make good pack animals. So glad for the link @kinder .

Do you think it would be possible to train up an adult goat to carry a pack? Or will I have to wait till I have little goat kidlings of my own and bottle raise them? So much reading to do, but alas, it's time to feed the sheep.

Hello TBG. Sorry I've been busy lately with my new chicks, 5 wks. old, and I just had a very long ride to go get my Kinder Goats, this past week. Just getting every one settled in. As to your interest in pack goats. Adults are what they would need to be if you want to put anything on them. Its said that a goat should be 3 years old be for putting any weight on them, because there bones will have not been fully developed until then, and you can mess the back up. As to the older one. I feel any animal can be trained under the right conditions ! :love. Of course that is if they want to be trained.

I have an Alpine doe whose twin brother is an excellent pack goat. I just love the alternative uses people find for goats aside from the usual pet, meat animal, brush clearing, show animal, milking, and seed stock producers. The packing animal use and cart pulling goats are so interesting and quite frankly underutilized. I have never seen a pack goat in action before but have seen a team of 2 Angora wethers pulling a cart occupied by a man who looked like one of the men from ZZ Top. Quite interesting as the 2 wethers had ultra-white long flowing curly locks and the tips of their nearly 3 ft. Long horns were adorned with gold colored ornamentation at their tips. A must see at this goat festival.

Hey goatboy1973 that sounds awesome. I can only imagine what one of those festival are like.:love. I hope to get more involved with the hole thing a little ways down the road. I'm just getting to know my new goats and am so pleased with their little personalities. IMO goats can be a great tribute to a family, and packing is something that a family can do and enjoy together. Most animals are happiest when they can interact with their family.:thumbsup
