We go to our local Albertsons and get lettuce, tomatoes, cuccumbers, and other vegetables which they are going to dispose of anyway. We go through it and anything that is slightly rotted at all, we compost, but we give our two little wethers a box of great stuff, which they enjoy. We give them a little hay, too, but we do not let them overeat. We give some of the vegetables and fruit to our chickens, rabbits and quail, but the bulk of the goodies go to our goats. They also get a few pieces of fruit if the store offers that. Apples that do not LOOK beautiful but are fine, and similar other fruit such as grapes, water melon, or strawberries. We don't allow too much fruit thinking it could affect their digestive tracts. They LOVE all these goodies!

I would say use the vege's sparingly with the goats and up the hay! Goats need roughage so a "little" should be free choice or depending on their weight. My goats get between 1-1.5 flakes(as an estimate) of hay per goat (nice sized flakes from 55-60 lb bales) each day. Use fruits and veges as special treats. Now for the chickens- they love to pick around.. just make sure items are cleaned and don't contain the special waxes and sprays to make fruit and veges' look pretty in the store!

This is a great idea! I can probably approach some grocery stores here and ask for their "to-be-disposed" vegetables that I can feed my chicks and the pigs that I am planning to get.
