My girls always seem itchy. Should I bathe or groom them?! Any specific brush I should use?! We go back to the vet in a month so i will have her look at their skin. Thank you all!

Why do you say itchy?
What do they do?

At this time of year mites are prevalent.
Mites (most) are microscopic and cannot be seen.
Lice can be seen.

There are burrowing and non-burrowing mites and lice.

Flaky skin is not always an indicator. You will see differnt areas of scratching or chewing depending on type of mite. Some mites only stay on feet (hoof line) and lower legs, some just on head mostly ears, some are all over.

Dry flaky skin can cause itching as well.

They are always scratching and biting at their sides and back end...nutmeg drags her little body scratching along the fence. They were just treated for a heavy worm load last week... I don't see flaky skin. Anything I should do? Thank you!!!

It sounds like mites.

You could try DE (diatomaceous earth) .
It will not treat burrowing mites.
Injectables treat burrowing but not non borrowing.
We prefer 10% permethrins mixed according to label and applied.
Harder to do in cold temps. This kills burrowing and non-burrowing.

I haven't transferred this over onto this site but I do have extensive info on external parasites here

There are natural remedies some swear by but I have this to be most effective.

You will want to remove all bedding, replace and add DE to the bedding.
Mites can come in on straw/hay but they cannot live long without a host.

The great thing about Nigies is you can take them in the house, bath them treat them and let them stand in the tub a few minutes... towel dry them, blow dry and let them run around til fully dry! :)

We like to mix up the solution and add it into the shampoo mix, after rinse we pour the permethrins solution over them.

So I purchased the DE and cleaned and replaced all bedding... Do I just sprinkle the DE on bedding?! Is there only one kind?! This says something about adding to food?! Thank you.

It is just food grade. Add to bedding and stir in a bit. Wear a mask and let it settle before you put the goats in.

What did you decide to treat them with?

I purchased DE and 10% permethrin as directed and will call the vet tomorrow and ask her recommendation before I proceed as they may be bred... Will update when I have a plan. Thank you so much.

You can use on pregnant goats.
You can use on goats in milk with a 24 hour milk withdrawal. Some just say one milking worth)

If you got the right product and mix correctly. The products are labeled for goats therefore it is not an off label product requiring vet rx.
Please mix with the right amount of water.

There was a woman that even though it said CONCENTRATE right on the label she never read the instructions and poured it down her sheep's back. They survived and fortunately she caught them in time to rinse rinse rinse... but it was scary.
