I'm trying to start halter training our goats so that hoof trimming is not such a hassle. I believe our pygmy will do fine, she is very friendly and will come right up to you. The problem is going to be with the Boers. They are a year old and are just starting to come up to us. The one finally lets us pet her a little while feeding graham crackers only, but the other doe still will not even come close. She will lean as far as she can, grab the cracker, and run away. I believe the Boers were traumatized when we first got them (see previous post), and are just now getting over it 8 months later. Hoof trimming has been a bad experience, taking an hour to catch one, and two people to hold them down. We have a small area that we can enclose them in now to catch them, but I would really like to halter train them for the trimming and hopefully later to separate them when they are eating. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would get a stanchion. It makes it sooooo much easier on them and you. And they are being fed on it...so they dont hate the stanchion for me anyway. And in a stanchion..you dont need two people..Just one..its nice!!! You can do what you need to do, trimming etc..

Also lead training is easy...just put the lead on them and start walking. If the resist...give them a raisin and have more so they will follow you. Stop and have them stop with you...and walk again. It will take some practive so be patient. But raisin or a snack helps alot when training goats.

Good luck!!!
