Welcome from Zebilon,NC
We are in Wake County east of Raleigh
40 Acres would be nice but where I'm located that would require a winning lottery ticket
We have 5 acres
My wife, 12 year old daughter and myself breed Nigerian Dwarf goats
We have been doing this for about 7-8 years now
We have 32 counting our 2 kids born this week

My wife manages the Zebulon Farmers Market

Hey Gabby. Just a thought here as I kinda see where this might go... You might want to start your own journal thread in the https://www.backyardherds.com/forums/members-backyardherds-journals.18/ area.

That way you can go off on any tangent you want and have everything in one place for easy retrieval :D The only rule is your journal title MUST start with your user name... after that (for a name) it's all up to you!

orrrrrrrrrrr you could just continue on here... ;)

norsseofcourse- Ponies! That's so sweet, I've heard of horse people but pony people just sounds so much more fun! 15 acres sounds so nice, one can only dream!

OneFineAcre- Ha! I said the NC/SC border because, in all honesty, I wasn't sure if discussing your real-life location on an introductory board was frowned upon or not. I'm actually from right outside Lumberton, North Carolina. I have been through Zebulon multiple times while looking at houses in your area, I loved it there! It sounds like you have quite the herd, I'm about to check out your website!

Latestarter- Thank you so much for the idea, I had no idea so many people would reply when I posted this, and I feel rude not replying to everyone...I think your option is the smarter choice :D

DutchBunny03 thank you for the welcome!! I have one rabbit at the moment. She's a seven year old New Zealand White rabbit. She was a random gift from an old farmer but I quickly fell in love with her!

There's no "rule" about not posting your location... Not putting your address or too close is kinda common sense in today's world... lots of bad folks out there. Lots of folks put their town or county and state. It's just that when folks ask for advice or help, 9 times out of 10 the answer will depend on where you're geographically located... What works up in New England might be a bad idea in south Texas... So before anyone can really help the person needing it, they first have to ask "where are you located"? By having it in your profile, it saves that step and time posting back and forth.

Welcome to BYH from CA. I usually say 'Sunny CA' but I would be lying if I said that right now. I live on 5 acres with about 40 goats, a bunch of chickens,a couple of ducks, and 4 LGDs. Also some house dogs and cats. I am building a Grade A goat dairy and hope to be done this spring. We are hopefully buying the 8 acres next to us and if we do I will raise a few pigs again and maybe a steer.

I love to garden and also have an orchard, blackberries, and blueberries. My other passion is my koi pond but I haven't had much time for that since starting work on the dairy.I would like to build a bigger pond, I had a nice one in our former home but I haven't had the time.

My dream farm would be one that includes a farm hand.

Southern by choice- Oh my goodness what a herd! That's incredible! :D If you don't mind me asking, what part of the state are you located in? You don't have to say a town/specific area, just like, north, south, near the coast, in the mountains, etc? I'm personally on the NC/SC border and it's almost impossible to find other homesteaders or friendly farmers around here!

We are outside of Raleigh, an hour SW. If you know where Sanford is, about 20 miles North.

Since you are looking at getting goats...
Boers are meatgoats and so are Pygmy's.
The other goats you mentioned (Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian) are dairy goats.
There care is similar but their feed and purpose will be quite different.
Goats are wonderful animals!

Our website is a little stale. I haven't updated in a while.
It' probably not doing much good.
We also have a FB page that is updated more often.

Welcome from NW Mississippi!!...:frow We have goats, chickens, ducks, and cats. We used to be truck drivers and have been thru your area quite a bit, we picked up several loads in Gaffney, SC and have been in all portions of NC. We are on our "Dream" place now, but still working on the set-up and getting things put together.
It is only my opinion and others may disagree with me, but from what I have found out about goats here locally, while doing my research in getting goats, you may want to start with pygmies over boers. At least in this area anyway, the boer is more suseptible to parasite and health issues than pygmies are, and being smaller they are much easier to handle than a bigger goat for a beginner. If it is milk you are looking for, then something else would suit ya much better, because pygmies and boers are considered meat goats. It's not that they can't be milked, some do, but the amounts and cooperation from them isn't always reliable as those in the dairy breeds.
We have a FB pygmy doe and 2 pygmy/boer crossed wethers. As was stated, this is only my opinion and my local area here, I have nothing against the boers, but for a beginner there is more forgiveness with the pygmy than the boer for oversight or learning and a little less goat to learn "Maintenance" on, hoof trimming and such. There are others in the dairy breeds that fit that bill, too. It is always best to research your area there and the breeds that are in the area, there is always a reason "Why" the successful owners have chosen the ones they have there. Anyway, we sure wish ya the Best in whatever direction ya decide to go in and will be Watching your development as your "Journey" progresses....again :welcome :)
