That is the formula we are using after experimenting with different feeds here in northeast Texas pasture. We feed Bermuda and Bahia pasture and hay here. In southern CA we fed alfalfa with NO supplements other than minerals and salt blocks. Alfalfa is the cheapest hay available in California since it it the one most widely planted in California and Ariziona. Alfalfa is high in protein and calcium, and our White Dorpers gained quickly on it. In fact, my sheep were usually about a 3.5 condition score on Alfalfa alone. The WD lambs gained great on alfalfa alone too. Corn is lower in protein, but I like it to add condition to my ewes after the weight they lose feeding their lambs. Higher protein levels makes a lean sheep but I like my ewes to carry a bit more body condition when going into breeding and milking. Corn can be hard to get here but during the winter Lowes stocks it for a decent price.2 parts Allstock, 1 part sweet feed and a bit of whole corn. This feed recipe isn’t written in stone.
