We purchased our homestead just over a year ago. I am a proud wife of an Army vet. Collectively we have 8 children, 3 at home fulltime and 6 at home during the summer. I home school one child. I sometimes cuss, but usually only while driving. I always have poop on my shoes no matter how careful I think I am being. My children are perfect, at least while I am watching. They do chores that most kids couldnt imagine doing nowadays! What do you mean you have to clean the chicken coop? I threw out the video game system and we now play poker as a family around the dining room table. What? They dont like playing pitch!
We have 2 rescue dogs that we adore. Zeus was on his way to the pound 5 years ago when I snatched him up. We are his 3rd and final family. He is a 150 lb. dogue de Bordeaux and Fila. Yep, he is HUGE with a huge gas problem. Yankee candle owes the past 5 years of profit to my dog Zeus. Jip is a young dog that we adopted from a humane shelter as a pup this summer. Best guesses are he is an Aussie/Pyrenees mix. They both get along wonderfully with the other animals. They spend most of their time napping inside with sporadic bursts of energetic play.
We have an acreage with 2 LaMancha dairy goats, Benedict the buck and Bernice the doe. Benny is a turd but Bernie is a cuddle bunny. We are expecting a kid (or kids) April 4th. I am waiting to pick up a LaMancha wether and another doe. I cant wait. We have 12 free range guinea fowl, 4 of which are jumbos. I wanted chickens so after researching the best fit for our needs and personalities, I chose the Delaware breed for our small farm. I added 11 Delaware chickens to our motley crew in March. Now I have laying hens and a very spoiled rooster that my kids call Florence. I have tried my hand at gardening. I had the most glorious peppers this year due to chicken poop! That was the only thing I could grow because of the drought. The goats ate the eggplants and everything else withered and dried up.
Last month while shopping at our farm and ranch supply store my children and I were captivated by the needy chirps of the last chicks of the season. We purchased 6 chicks and 6 more guineas, which is completely out of character for me as I like to research and prepare before hand. Now we are in love with what appear to be 3 white crested black Polish, 1 black crested white Polish and 2 Ameraucana chicks. Who knew? I hope they lay! I am all about being practical. But if the Polish chicks grow up just to look pretty, they have already earned their keep. My home schooled aspie son LOVES them and they love him back.
We are planning on having a family dairy cow and a few beef cattle, preferably a smaller dual purpose breed such as Dexters or Devons. The jury is still out on a breed as my husband wants Scottish Highland cattle. I worry about the heat and all that hair!

I look forward to BYH user advice! Thanks so much.

Hi there Okie!

I loved your intro, it gave me quite a few chuckles.

I have a mastiff named Bella, she is a huge dog as well. Fortunately we dont have a gas problem. Instead, she drools. I should own stock in Bounty paper towels, lol.

I have two boys, ages 18 and 15. I homeschool both of them. Well, the 18 year old graduated last year and is college now. But I've been a homeschool mom for 15 years (my oldest wanted "school" when he was three, so we started early).

I understand the poop on the shoes thing, lol. We are a hestiant family.....if there is mud on the floor we have to get a papertowel to get it up, just in case. It's better anyway, cuz if something is on the floor it is usually covered in Bella drool.

I am also OCD, compulsive about a having a clean house. My lifestyle and my compulsion are a tiring mix.

I make a yearly trip to Kansas/Oklahoma. I visit a ranch in Sedan.

Nice meeting you, you will love it here!

Hi redtailgal!
Thank you for the warm welcome. I am glad you chuckled. I love your signature. That made me chuckle as well, as I can relate sans the picture taking. I am the point and shoot type, with my mouth, guns and cameras.
I have a soft spot in my heart for mastiffs! We call the drool shoelacesand Zeus can part a room with both ends.
Congratulations on your graduate. Job well done! I want to homeschool both boys but my youngest (12) wants to play all the sports. We dont have a homeschool sports program out in the sticks where I live.
Oh my gosh! OCD and poop! You must be exhausted! I have to pick my battles, although it seems I am always losing. LOL
A ranch in Sedan.it sounds like it should be full of elk! Do they get the elk herds coming in on that ranch?
Nice to meet you!

No Elk on the ranch that I have heard of. Just lots and lots of coyotes right now. They have a couple thousand cattle, most are feeder calves to finish out for sale, but there is also a smaller breed herd of hereford. They've been hit pretty hard by the yotes, and are losing 1-2 calves a day right now. My friend shot one yesterday as it literally pulled a calf out of the laboring cow. Those yotes are smart, they see a cow lay down to deliver, and just wait for the head to pop out.....then they pull it out themselves, tearing up the cow in the process. :somad They are having to do a 24 hour horseback patrol of the calving pasture right now.

If your into pics, check out the photography stuff in the hobbies section.

WELCOME to the forum!

I see chicken math is already kicking in at your house!

I love the Polish chickens. I had four white crested Polish and, due to predators where we used to live, I am down to only one rooster (a pic of him is in the link under my signature). I want to get some more real bad!

:D

Hi EllieMay!
The Polish chicks are full of personality! They are the first to greet us and fly up to our lap. When we first saw them, they had lil mohawks. Now its a full blown crest. What kind of layers were your Polish chickens?

Thank you for the welcome, elevan!

The coyotes are bad this year! I have seen them casually walking across the road in the middle of the day or lounging in the sun. We haven't had problems with them *knock on wood* but I have a rifle ready if they show themselves on our hill.
I feel for your friends! They are being hit hard between the drought and the coyotes.

yes, it's been rough. They fared pretty well with the drought though, culling the herd and carefully selecting the feeder crop to bring in. They managed to keep their water level at a decent level (water is hard to come by when you are dealing with thousands of acres). They were fortunate enough to have plenty of hay laid back.
