Hry,

Like i said i am new to large animals but not to small, i am a working vet tech, hopefully finished my schooling and get my lisence by the end of this year to first part of next :D :D

my family will be moving to some property soon so i have been looking into multi purpose cattle animals and I am one of those i do a TON of research before i get anything!!!

There are a few reasons i have been looking into multi purpose animals, one fact is i have a few friends who do card and use wool, fur, ext and i tought it would be cool to help supply them. i also like the idea of being as self dependent as possible. and i enjoy my meat but feel bad for the things that happen in the large slaughter houses, i have been buying more from my local farmers, but when we move i would really like to say i know Exactly how that animal was raised before it fed myself and my family.

Sorry theres a lot, i had to work up the good speal when im convincing the rest of the family and the people i work with some are hard core vegitarians who like to argue x.x

But as i said i am a working vet tech, my family has also bred and shown dogs for over 40 years now, and with that has come behavior (which has turned into my moms specialty ;) )
i have fostered, bred, lived and cried with dogs, cats, rats, snakes, and horses (at a ranch i worked at part time as a teen) so i do have ideas of what i am getting into, i am just trying to find what works for us, whats the cheapest without losing any quality for the animals i am raising, as well as time and care. so i dont bite more then i can chew. since I will be the one doing most of the work, my parents have hurt backs, and my daughter is to young to really help, (except with feeding which she does love! :) )

So yeah, if you cant tell im a women who likes to be kept busy  well thats it for now... hope everyone has a good night!

:D

:welcome

What breed of dog do you raise?

I used to raise Dobermans for drug/police/working dogs.

Doxies are very useful as heating pads! We have three of them and they definitely keep me warm. Not so attractive in the summertime, though!

Our neighbor had some Scottish Highlander cattle and I was tempted to try brush out some undercoat and use the fibers in my basket making, but I was rather intimidated by the big horns and the fact that I couldn't see their eyes to tell what they were thinking!

Home raised meat is definitely the best. We name all of our calves, feed them well, treat them well, and they are happy while they are here with us. Mostly, we raise Jersey cross as our cow is 3/4 Jersey, 1/4 Holstein and we've been breeding her to Angus. I milk the cow for cheesemaking and house milk, plus she raises 2 or more extra calves for us every year. I sell the extra calves to make a bit of money. If I were having to feed milk replacer I'd probably lose on the deal.

Keep us updated on your adventures with bigger animals.

I have an OLD Doxie. She is a "tweeny".......maxing at at 8 pounds, but is down to 6.8 now (a healthy weight). she blew up and got really fat while on steroids, lol. She's never had a heat cycle, and the rest of her litter is over 20 pounds. She just stopped growing.

Love my lil girl, lol
