Yeah, my hens free range...but there's just too many bugs (total) this year.
We had a couple of the borer bees move into our deck and now the yellow jackets that were in the siding are gone...they're gone from the barn too :/
I've done some research and found that "painting" the wood with almond oil will repel the borer (carpenter) bees. Haven't tried it yet.
The borer bees seem to be getting rid of the wasps and yellow jackets :/ And since the borer bees aren't attacking us since we got them away from the entrance to the barn, then I'm inclined to let them be until we can paint the rafters and deck with almond oil. It doesn't kill them it's just supposed to make the wood inhospitable to them. We'll see.
Eleven, I think it must be a special time for bees at the moment.
My problem is different than yours, but the goats and dogs outside water buckets are swarming with bees. I have had to put extra buckets in, and let them do their thing in the others.
Having checked for answers on line, it would seem my problem is due to weather conditions, it has been overly dry here, we are getting if not got to the point of drought, and apparently the bees will search out water and take it back to there hive to cool down the hive.
Different problem I know, but just thought i would mention it.
Warthog, here we've been lucky to have had 6 days without rain since the beginning of the year This has turned out to be a bad year for bugs period for us. We too are having the problem of bees in the water buckets too...not sure why when there is plenty of standing water everywhere.
Ticks are bad and the season has just begun so I'm getting guineas. I expect mosquitoes to be a problem and so am looking into ways to deal with those too. Gonna have to get a bug net for myself and each critter if it keeps up
Elevan - this was sent to me re killing mosquitoes - I haven't tried it yet and some people tell me it doesn't work, but will try it when we get to mosquitoe season.
I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared.. The next year I filled?a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well.. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it....Pass it on.
OUR FRIEND'S COMMENTS: I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors.
So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house.
