My goats are so swollen from the parasites coming back. I have pig iron but it does not say how much to give per lb. Nothing! So stressed out from all of this. Seems there is always something going on with one or all or the goats.

O.k. So I found it online somewhere. Gave a second dose of the safeguard along with pig iron, B12 complex, and antibiotics. I just hope I gave the shots the right way. I've had to give antibiotic shots in the skin before so that's how I did it.?.?

All shots except hormones can be given SQ so what you did was fine. Glad you were able to find out what to do.

what antibiotic did you use?

Some antibiotics go UNDER the skin......some go in the muscle.

Good thing! The first site I saw said to give 4 cc pig iron per 100lb now I found another site that says 1 cc per 100lb I sure hope I didn't OD them . Ugh! :he

They all seem severally bloated as well :( blown up like balloons

Nuflor can shut down the rumen. You may need to give baking soda and probiotics.

Not sure why you're giving antibiotics if the problem is parasitic...?

From another website:

"Ive heard countless stories about owners worming their goats that appear to have a heavy worm burden only to have them die. After worming a goat other things can happen as a result of killing the worms that cause the goat to die. Another friend of mine (Edie Grover of Wetumpka, AL) explained it to me this way: as the wormer effectively kills the worms in a goats stomach those dead worms begin to decay and rot, creating toxins or infectious matter inside the goats digestive system. The good news is all the worms are dead; the bad news is your goat is being poisoned or experiencing severe infections inside its digestive tract. So, you still end up with a dead goat, and the worms indirectly caused it. This all seems logical. To combat the toxins or infection Edie Grover shared the following options to me: (1) if you suspect your animal has a heavy worm burden and you need to de-worm it, give it some antibiotics to fight off the resulting infection or toxins. Also, antibiotics kill of the digestive enzymes inside a goats rumen so you will need to the animal some form of microbial products (viable, naturally occurring microorganisms) to restart their digestive enzymes. (2) Involves de-worming in two stages. First give a low dose which kills a small amount of the worms, thereby avoiding the massive load of dead worms, in the digestive tract of a goat. Then follow by a heavy dose, a short time span later, that kills the remaining worms in an animals stomach; which allows for the more tolerable passage of dead worms."

I've owned / dewormed / cared for goats for 20 yrs and never once treated w/ antibiotics (even those w/ bottle jaw) when deworming - so I don't know what to tell you in that regard. I don't use Nuflor lightly, it's my 'last resort' drug because of the strength....I wouldn't use it for a 'just in case' scenario. It can shut down the rumen because it's so strong. It may do more damage than the rotting parasites.

I do believe if they're BLOATED you need to give baking soda ASAP. 2 TBS dissolved in water, orally. Repeat in 1 hr if there's no improvement. Massage the belly and keep them up and moving if possible.

I would give PROBIOS PASTE 2x a day (starting NOW) to put the 'good bugs' back in the gut.

Some of us don't have much internet time, esp. on weekends, so having to read 2-3 threads gets confusing and more time consuming than we can manage. Keeping the relevent points in one thread is easier / more likley to get you the help you need.

A B vitamin shot should give them energy. I use B vitamin, red cell (oral supplement), and probios (good rumen bugs) when my goats don't feel well. I've never given pig iron, so I can't advise you on that, but B vitamin shots can be given 2x a day, 1cc per 25#.

Have you had a fecal ran to see what parasites you're after?

If I discovered a goat here w/ bottle jaw, I would A) treat w/ a triple dose of Safeguard (panacur) today. Give a B vitamin shot, probiotics, and 5-10 cc of red cell (depending on the size of the goat - ours are all 'big' goats.)
Continue the B shots and red cell daily. I may supplement w/ 1/4 c calf manna daily. Make sure they're getting all the good hay they want. Fresh water. Alfalfa pellets or hay.
Treat w/ 1cc per 20# oral ivermectin injectable in 3 days. Check eyelid color for improvement.
Repeat ivomec in 1 wk.
Keep checking eyelid color daily to see if they're improving....have a fecal ran after the 2nd ivomec dose to see if treatment has been / is working.
If at any point the goat worsened, I would call my vet.

Yes. I have a vet and they have been treated for coccidia and parasites. They where doing fine for a week and then by Thursday night they where swollen again. I'll be calling vet in the morning.

Sorry. I'm panic attach :(
