Hey ya'll! I live in Alabama with my hubby and kids. I'm a former 4-H and FFA member and have been around stock most of my life. We currently have three goats (Boer, Nigerian x Nubian, Fainting), two equines (AQH and mini), two pigs (kune kune) rabbits (New Zealands, TAMUK Composites) a flock of laying chickens and a few banties. We decided to get a few more goats after selling our meat herd because we missed having them around, and added on the pigs after spending a couple of years with feeder hogs. My husband wanted a smaller pasture pig. Our first litter is due any day now and we are both excited!

That's fun. I really like watching all the piglets running around together. Have you looked into American Guinea Hogs? I here they're great on pasture and between mini and full size.

Check out some other threads and jump in if you feel the need. Nice to have you join the herd!

Hi from North Central Arkansas. We're looking into pasture pigs for next spring. We want something a bit smaller but still enough meat for the trouble. An endangered heritage breed is preferred. I don't know anything about pigs so I'd be starting from scratch. The idea of pasture pigs is what changed our minds from a definite NO WAY. We saw the enclosures of our neighbors and pigs in the filth and decided that wasn't for us. So when we learned about pastured pigs, we decided to entertain the idea.

Micah, we have thought about getting an AGH gilt/sow to breed to our kune kune boar. Some of the people around here that do pasture pigs really like that cross.

Ponker, we are really liking the kune kune. My family had hogs when I was a kid, and my hubby and I have had feeder pigs. The problem with those are if you pasture them, they wreck the field. If you confine them there is more labor involved. The kune kune haven't torn anything up (yet) and are really personable and easy to handle. Our corn field has stopped producing, and I herd them over to it and they pick up dropped corn and after a few hours I herd them back to their field. The drawback is it takes a little more time to reach slaughter weight.

Greetings @rude_mare :frow Welcome to BYH! Glad you joined us :) Sounds like you've got a nice selection of animals there. We've got a really active goat group here as well as quite a few bacon lovers and horse owners. And of couse, most of us have chickens as well. Browse around the forums :caf and jump in when you feel inclined! Oh, and since nobody specifically mentioned it, we're all a bunch of picture junkies, so if you have a few of your animals you'd be willing to share, you can help some of us get our daily "fix" :D Thanks!

We are going to do the kune kune pigs. Same reason we like them, they are gentle, easy to handle, don't root the grass and turn it into a mud pit. :love. I love them.

Piece of advice
Don't feed them all they want. We had a friend that did the pigs got so fat that they had to roll to you:eek:. Then she tried putting them on a diet. When she did that they knew when feeding time was :he. When she didn't feed them they screamed super loud. So they went for butcher.

Anyway welcome.

Welcome! Can't wait to see pics of the new litter!

On a side note, GOS pigs root less than other standard sized breeds, so for those of us who want a semi pasture pig but don't want little slow growing pigs, this is a good option. They root, yes, but are not as destructive.
