They are pretty sheep, aren't they? Though I've never seen them around here...Shelly May said:I noticed you were from Suffolk VA, maybe you should get some suffolk sheep:
I'd like to get them in 4H but we haven't yet. Oldest is 10. We would be set to do most any animal I guess. Which 4H did you do? How do I enroll and what do I do? Perhaps this next year we can join.20kidsonhill said:Hello:
One of my children, actually my first one was born in Suffolk. We lived between Suffolk and Richmond for about 4 years. Now we live in the Valley. It was fun being able to take a day trip and go to the beach when we lived out that way. My kids by and raise suffolk or hampshire lambs for the county fair. The are really big sheep. We have a really good quality farm near us that have some very competitive stock. Are any of your kids in 4H or planning on being in 4H?
Most 4H groups require the child to be 9, you join when the new school year begins and participate for the year inorder to show the following summer. Different 4H clubs specialize in different things, like there is a cooking club, horse club, and meat market club, but you can be in any of them to show any of the animals at your county fair as a 4H member. You call your extension office to find out about area clubs. The club we are in meets one time a month an doesn't do a lot of extra projects, mostly for kids who are raising projects for the meat market shows. We show meat lambs and meat goats through 4H. My oldest daughter did show a heifer a couple years in a row, but that was through FFA in highschool. We buy our lamb projects, but we raise our goats and we also are working on a meat rabbit project, but that is just getting started. I only have one still in 4h, he is 11, I have another daughter who is 17, she showed a couple years, but didn't like the chores, and I also have a 19 year old that showed for 10 years and loved everything to do with it. I am not sure if you can joing half way through the year and still participate in a 4H show this coming summer. You might beable to. But joining and learning this year and attending some shows and helping out a couple other families would be a good way to learn about it and find out what is in your area.Isthelifeforme said:I'd like to get them in 4H but we haven't yet.
