My little ram lamb (well, he's 11 months old now!) has one horn that is growing the "wrong way" and soon will be going into the back of his head. Its about a finger's width away now, and rubbing his ear raw.

He was banded at birth so the horns haven't grown nearly as much as other intact rams, but I can see it will be a problem in the near-ish future.

I'm having the vet come out next week to trim the horn. Yikes!

I trust the vet and know everything will be fine, but nervous mom here. Anyone have any experience with horn trimming they would like to share with me??

What can I expect? I know it will be bloody, but will it hurt my little guy? Should we do the other horn, too, just to keep them even?

We are not de-horning, just trimming. Would love to hear from others....

The Vet cost will be more than what the weather is worth. I have cut those types of horns with a hack saw myself. It could be a bloody mess if you cut into the quick part of the horn ( so just cut off just the tip , this will not hurt) but will soon stop bleeding . Due to the expense, being a weather ( it is unable to reproduce), and 11 months of age, he has no economic value... your best bet is to send him to freezer camp pronto.
