How to access the quality of hay

Get it tested. That is the only way to know for certain. Ask how they raise it, what they put on it, how and when they test the soil, fertilizers, lime application,etc etc.

Goast need 12% protien, A little more for lactating does. Anything over that and you are just peeing money away.

I looked up the prennial peanut, it looks like good hay, wish I could grow it up here. I really like the sanfoin, it grows about 4-4 1/2 feet tall and has pretty pink flowers that are about 8" long. We have a hard time keeping the Elk out of it.

I wish I could grow the perennial peanut, or even buy it here. Only down in FL and the gulf I think. I've seen it in bales, and I really wish I could get it too.

The sanfoin looks really nice too. But, it does look like lespedeza to me. They are all legumes. I got 50 bales of lespedeza one time from VA. Going to try to find a source.
