My family and I have had a small registered Nigerian dwarf goat herd for about four years. I think it would be awesome to get into the show biz, but I'm not really sure where to start. We also have sheep and participate in the 4-H market lamb project every year. I have googled and googled and googled, but I can't find any shows in the state of Virginia! Any Ideas??

First of all, what part of Virginia are you in?

For showing Nigerians, it's mostly going to be ADGA. I would check their website, or even call them. We are ADGA members, and I don't think all of the shows are on the newsletter. But, if it's ADGA sanctioned, they will be providing the judge and the ribbons.

There is NDGA shows and AGS shows, but I don't think they are as prevelant as ADGA shows.

I ask what part of VA, because I know some shows in NC you may be interested in.

We looked at the VA State Fair last year, but the information wasn't available on the web until very late.

Also, let me know what ya'll find out because we might be interested in picking up a spring and fall show ourselves.

The Dairy Goat show at the N.C. State Fair is one of the best in the country. It's the second largest behind the ADGA National Show. There are people from all over the country that come to it. The Nigerian Dwarf, Oberhasli, and Nubian ADGA National Champions were all at the N.C. State Fair. Oh, and they all won

So, if you want to get beat by the best.....

The Stafford County Hartwood Days Fest. has an ADGA show. It is small, but last year there were quite a few ND there.
More info will be on their website when it gets closer. It is in September.

Well, I'm in Botetourt Virginia which is just North of Roanoke. I had already checked ADGA's website, but all of theirs posted were nowhere near us. Oh, and like I said we are going to be new with all this... so a few questions may be in order. For the does, do they have to be in milk or can they be dry?

They can be dry, not likely to place very well. We carried a dry Sr. Doe to the N.C. State fair, but that's because they pay premiums down to 10th place :D

They show Jrs and Sr's seperately.

For Jrs. they show in different age classes based on date of birth.

Jr. Kids birthday between a-b
Intermediate Kids birdate between c-d
Sr Kids birthdate between e-f
Dry Yearlings.

They place the animals in each age group.

Then they do the champion line up which will be first and second place in each age group.

So, from these 8 animals they pick grand champion and grand reserve champion.

They then do the Sr Does the same way.

Milkers 1-2 years old
2-3 years old
3-4 years old
4-5 years old
5 and older.

Place animals in each age group and 1st and second place do the champion line up to be GC Sr. Doe and GR Senior Doe

Then they will usually bring GC Jr. and GR Jr. and GC Sr and GR Senior for overall grand champion.

Some shows will also have other events like Dam and Daughter, Get of Sire, and Dairy Herd.

I found the new river valley fair. It has a dairy goat section, but this is all I can find. Do you think I could email/call/write a letter to NDGA (Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association) and tell them that they need to come strut their stuff in VA? (**nicely of course :D )

I think the Shenendoah Valley one that suruburban mentioned is not too far from you.

We are lucky in that we have the N.C. State Fair 20 minutes away. The NCDGBA show is in Rocky Mount which is about an hour from us.

So, if you have anything within an hour, then you will be lucky.

The PDGBA has a show in Shelby, NC which I looked on the map is about 3 plus hours from you.

Their is also a show in Spindale, NC which where the ADGA headquarters is, and I think it's about 3-4 from you.
