we always set up a pen far enough away so they couldn't see each other, didn't always work but most of the time . just make sure both pens are solid.

We always move the moms outside away from the piglets and keep the piglets in the barn for a couple more weeks. That gives the mommas time to dry up and if you have to put their babys back out with them at a later date, they can't try to suckle to get milk since she's all dried up. Hope that helps.

If you have a trailer or somewhere where a big pig cannot get out of, feed her in there then grab the piglets. Even though our Large Blacks were very docile some of them were very protective of their babies. We knew each one personally so knew which ones would chase us. Those ones got to go in the trailer!

Once you have all the piglets put them in an area where they cannot get out. Mama will forget them after a few days. We had a movable "hut" that we used to put the piglets in. This was also when we started to train them to electric with a wire on the inside of this hut. After about 3-4 days we would put the piglets behind electric netting.

Do pig people not worry about mastitis?
NO! I have NEVER seen a case of mastitis in a pig. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen but I think it is rare. Once you wean the piglets, the sow just like a human, will swell up & feel like Dolly Parton for a few days but everything quickly shrinks back down into shape. Sows are ready to breed back within 3-10 days & most times do breed back successfully first time, sometimes second heat.
