So almost an hour ago our Nigerian Dwarf goat Peggy delivered her very first kid! A vigorous black&white buckling. He started getting up and moving very quickly after birth, Peggy has been cleaning him and talking to him. We gave her some grain and warm water with honey&dipped the kids cord in iodine. He has found the teat maybe 3 or 4 times but only sucked for a few seconds. Now he is just standing there getting cleaned up, looks pretty exhausted! Is he nursing ok? Also, she had another bubble but there was no indication of another baby&she isn't pushing or crying like she was. There has been no placenta delivered yet. Everything sound ok? So nervous with our very first birth! How long do they stay in the birthing stall? We have 1 other Nigerian Dwarf doe who grew up with Peggy who is in the general pen. Thanks for any advice!

I saw this was posted at 1:30. I hope that if she had another baby in the extra bubble you saw, that she already delivered. The placenta should also have been delivered by now as well. If not, someone will need to go in to check that everything is OK. Goats deliver everyone pretty quick and the placenta doesn't usually take more than an hour at most. I hope all is well. Congrats on your new kid!

She did deliver the placenta and made quick work of cleaning it up. I'm outside in the barn with them again. Baby was laying down when I got out here. I tried to stand him up to make him nurse and he nuzzled under her belly some but didn't nurse. How often should he be nursing? Like I said, he only took a few sips it seemed in the hour and a half after birth. Also, its about sixty degrees out here. Think he will do ok?

My smaller Nigerian babies don't nurse very much or very long. The bigger nigerian kids will drink for a few seconds then quit. They just do it a bunch of times. If he is up every now and then and has energy, he should be fine. 60 degrees is a decent temp, as long as it isn't drafty and he isn't wet. He will snuggle with mom to stay warm. Babies tend to sleep a lot the first day or so , but should be bright eyed and bushy tailed when they are awake.

This was Mama and baby right after delivery. He is only nursing on the left hand side, so yesterday morning and night I milked just the right hand side, and got out about a pint each time? Didn't get hardly anything this morning, but there wasn't as much of a discrepancy between the two sides of the udder. Maybe he figured out how to eat off both?
