A couple of weeks ago I gave our buckling the tetanus antitoxin post disbudding just to be safe. I can still do the CD&T vacc correct?? We just had to redo his disbudding yesterday it's a little raw looking. :( We're concerned about infection. Should I give him the CD&T today and booster in three weeks? He's 5 weeks old. Thanks!

You'll probably get several answers to this question, but when I asked this question a while back, I was told that it would be too much of the Tetanus component for the goat.

Wouldn't the Tetanus injection you used previously still be effective?

Also, if infection is a concern, I would think antibiotic would be more effective should the goat need it. Personally, I wouldn't use antibiotic as a prophylactic.

Antitoxin only lasts for 14 days...so he would need another antitoxin - and CD&T for lasting protection.

Watch him closely. It is never recommended to re-do a disbudding until you've waited 8-9 weeks after the first disbudding.

Thanks, I wasn't sure about overlapping a tetanus. I'll wait a few weeks before a CD&T and keep a close eye on him.

You can go ahead and give the antitoxin and the toxoid at the same time - toxoid TAKES 14 days to be effective, and the antitoxin LASTS 14 days, so you will be covered.

The thing to remember has to do with the C&D. If you give a goat who has been vaccinated with C&D toxoid the ANTITOXIN, it nulls the toxoid and the goat must be revaccinated once the crisis the antitoxin was given for is past.

I gotcha, so since giving him an antitoxin he's safe to receive the Tetanus toxoid because it won't be effective for another 14 more days.
He hasn't had any CD yet so I'm good to go.
My Storey's guide book read nothing about waiting if scurs grow in, just to reburn. I should have looked for some more opinions I guess. Thanks for your help.

Disbudding makes the scull brittle for awhile - like a broken bone, it needs time to heal and harden again. This is why it's recommended to wait 8-9 weeks past the first burn. Apparently they're more prone to brain damage, etc, when reburned before that. I would bet though that it will be OK.

Just spray some wound kote or similar on there to help it dry out and prevent infection.
