I'm worried about one of my ND girls...she is about 2 weeks from her due date and is still allowing her doe kid to nurse a bit. She just isn't putting on the way I would like her to. She's been wormed, coppered, fed separately on occasion to make sure she's getting her fair share, but now I'm feeling that I should have separated her doe kid from her. I had asked a few local goat people and they didn't seem to think it would be a problem, but I don't like skinny mommas and she just isn't looking "right." I'm concerned about the new kid getting colostrum also.
I do have the ability to separate them, but it will just be terribly inconvenient...but doable.
They'll be separated at kidding time of course and for a few days after....
Am I rightly concerned??

I would pull the kid, we quit milking 2 months before next kidding, so mom can build up that udder and make colustrum for the kids, I actually quit milking before that, kids should be off mom by 3 months. Hopefully you can separte them.;)

In one of the goat books I have it says the mama needs at least 2 months of dry time for the kids to develop and grow properly. I would separate them. Good luck with it all! How old is the nursing kid by the way?

The nursing kid is 11 months old. She is such a mama's girl. In hindsight, I realize I should have separated them earlier, but I was certain that she would stop on her own and I did see the mama shove her away a few times, but recently I've seen her nursing while the mama just stands there.

I agree with above posts. Get the kid off of mom ASAP. Your new kids may be at risk with not getting good colostrum.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. We separated them today and hopefully everything will work out. The spoiled nursing kid is not happy! I've never had one to nurse that long so I've never dealt with this situation.
Thanks, again!!

One of my nigerian dwarfs kidded and then went over to her mom, who had also kidded, and nursed a bit. Crazy!
