my open cow is or was in standing heat today. she had all the tell tells. swollen, clear mucus, riding other cows and would stand to be mounted. my bull is 18 months give or take he is well built and devolpeped. my cow would approach him in the pasture and he would just sniff make a lame attempt to mount and then just walk off. i bought this little guy as a day old and bottle raised him to be my little herd bull and had the dairy cross bull i had last year made into burger. the cow should be back in right around the 24th or 25th. I dont know what to do with this guy. if she comes back in i will know he did not do his job. i am keeping my fingers crossed that he was able to breed her why i was in the house or feeding the other animals and changing the sprinklers. well i guess i will know oct 24 and 25th. i think i might try to find a AI tech and see what it will cost me to have her AI bred during her next cycle. should i keep this guy another year and give him a second chance to redeem him self or call the slaughter man and see if he can get him in with the steer on the 30th.

The thing is, it could be one of two things:

1. He's a night rider
2. He know's you're watching and would rather do it when your back is turned or your not around at all.

Or, if worse comes to worse, he could be a dud. But the only way to see that is if she settles or not.

Good luck with him.

I'd take him to a vet and have a breeding soundness exam done. I had a young bull that didn't have much interest in cows. Took him to a vet and had a BSE done. The vet found that the bull had a hair ring around his penis. This caused him much pain. We got rid of the offending hairs, and the bull was fine in a couple weeks. The hair had actually begun to grow into the penis in this poor bull.

What breeds is he? maybe he's just slow. Personally I've never seen a bull that was slow to gain libido, but I have seen it in plenty of other farm animals. Maybe he's just needing an extra 6 months to reach that two year old point before he really gets the hang of his duty.

He most likely got the job done.
We have a young bull that we got more than a year ago and we thought he wasnt getting the job done cause he was doing the same thing but it turned out he was just a night rider. lol. Now we got to very pregnant happy cows who are due anytime now. Good luck.

We have two cows that end up pregnant ever year and I never see a thing it seems cows are really quick at this although I do wish we knew when they were bred just curious does anybody use any of the marking type devices you can buy that go on the bull to show they have been bred?

The bull is long gone, he got some major attitude and had to go. I did get a nice little heifer calf out of him.
