Things have been going well between the new girl and Ruth. Problem- a few days ago we started noticing she wasn't eating much of her new hay. Her milk production has gone down so we have been giving her more of the old alfalfa she has been eating. Today, she is lethargic and obviously not interested in food. ( I am out of town and have had a really bad day at work and have just learned of this, this evening) She is starting to act all goofy like her 1/2 sister did before she died two days later.
I told my roomy a bit ago to go out and check her temp, gums and eyelids. I hope to hear something soon.
My mentor thought the last girl had some funky strain of tetnus. Both these girls have had their shots. I am getting really confused about all this. Starting to wonder if it is some genetic thing as our new goat looks amazing! Where Ruth has gotten thinner and has never been good about keeping on weight.
Hope The Moderator or Babs sees this new post here.

Really need more info...like that temp, gums and eyelids...and anything else you can give us.

Your mentor thinks tetnus after 30 years of goats, I'd say grab the antitoxin and give it. I'd definitely consult with the vet though in your place.

What do you mean by "acting goofy"?

with the rainy weather there are a lot of parasites and bacterial possibilities.
Did the vet ever do a fecal on the last doe?

Parasites are terrible this year.

Listerosis is also on the rise this year with all the rain.

I would hit her with a ton of Penn G, every 6 to 8 hours, B-complex, thiamin if you have it. worm her, give probiotics and give the Tetnus antitoxin just to be on the safe side.
If she is still alive after all that in 24 hours go down to Penn G twice the next couple of days, keep up the B-complex, probiotics.

I hope your goat pulls through for you. Im new to goats so I have no advise but I do appreciate all the threads on byh to help me learn more about goats and what to watch for. This may be a bit off topic but I read a lot of people talk about goat mentors, how does one go about finding a goat mentor?
