This morning when letting my sheep out one of my ewes didnt want to put weight on her back foot. I also noticed her front knees are swollen. I didnt notice this yesterday but could have been. It has been so so wet and rainy my first thought is foot rot on her back foot/feet and maybe her front knees are swollen from over compensating her weight? Never dealt with it before, how should i treat it if thats what it is?

Take her temperature.

I don't think it's foot rot. It might be a bacterial infection that went to her joints.

Foot rot doesn't make the knees swell. Sheepgal you are really on top of things. Your mentor must have been very thorough!

I usually only use pen-g for outside injuries ie. Bites or fence injuries. Other antibiotics for inside depending on where the issue is. Did you do a close inspection, could she have a snake bite or some other outside injury? For snake bite I don't do anything, the only poisonous snakes we have round here are copperheads. I give dogs bynadryl but don't think I'd give it to a sheep. Banimine would be my choice for swelling and pain.

I dont have any banamine on hand so i gave her a dose of penicillin this morning. I talked to the breeder i got her from and she said usually she only sees this in lambs so she must have an outside wound that allowed bacteria to enter. Shes out grazing now and seems less sore on that back foot but her front knees are still swollen and shes stiff some. Should i do penicillin once or twice a day and for how many days?
I was told i can give oxytetricyclin (i probably killed the spelling on that) along with pen but i have to find somewhere to get it, only place is tractor supply and they have a very small selection. And of course it is Sunday!

Oxitet is la200 I use the generic. I don't know about the pen dose. Is it pen-g long acting or what. I use the long acting and do 1 time every other day for about 4-5 days. la-200 is every other day or even every 3 days for maybe 7 days if I think its warranted. Read the label. Usually only twice.
Banimine is a script and its for pain and swelling not infection. I would not use both oxitet and pen. Just not what I was taught to do. I don't even think it's recommended to mix the 2 drugs.

Ok thank you. I will stick to the penicillin since its what i have. She seemed some better yesterday evening just still swollen.
At tractor supply they had two different kinds of pen. Long acting and short acting. I got the short acting since that is what ive always got. It says the daily dose is 1ml per 100lbs, so to me thats just once a day? Do i need to stick to the label or dose her twice a day to knock this out of her? Is this life threatening?
