I know that llamas are good at watching over sheep but how are they with chickens? Do they like chickens? (Not to eat, I hope). Would they trample on them? Would they stay up at night and protect against racoons, foxes and opossums? Just a thought. I assume that they would get along fine with my pygmy goats. If I had just one, would it play with the goats and not be lonely. How much room does a llama need to be happy?

They are amazing creatures. I love the way they "watch" over a herd of sheep .

It is really important to get a llama that is actually a guard llama. Not all llamas are guard llamas. I'm not sure how well a llama would protect chickens against racoons and possums and such. I guess it would depend on housing. The llama would need to live in the same housing but then the chickens would do too much pooping in a llama's hay which would cause problems. I think a llama would be too lonely if he/she was only in with chickens.

Llamas are better for larger animals like sheep and goats. Chickens tend to scatter when a predator is around, and often a fox is so sly that he'll snatch a chicken without a llama noticing. For chicken protection, a predator proof coop will be your biggest asset.

Our llamas let weasels / possums / etc. get the chickens b/c they don't see those animals as 'predators'...and aren't bonded to the chickens like they were the goats. Loved / protected the goats to death, but didn't care if my red-golden pheasants or white peafowl got murdered.

So I got a dog to watch the birds....and the male llama tried to kill the dog.

Had to sell the llama b/c the dogs will watch the whole place, and I just could NOT get that llama to accept the LGD pup, no matter what.
