We had meeting with school on Friday for Dominic. We reviewed the incident two weeks ago when the computer class went out to play without telling anyone. The poor Nurse ended up running full tilt from one end of the school looking for him. It worked out okay but was scary all around. The school had good updates to their plans. This is the first year there are Type 1 diabetics at the elementary school so everyone is learning.
We also made the hard decision to hold Dominic back next year. Between Type 1 diabetes and dyslexia diagnoses, needing glasses, and missing weeks out sick he is really behind still at kindergarten reading levels. I don't want his to start thinking he's stupid, he was just too busy trying to survive to learn. His wonderful teacher will have him again next year.

The school meeting was productive, they are working with y’all to ensure Dominic is well cared for while at school. You are right, poor baby was trying to survive an avalanche of health events that would be hard on an adult, much less a little boy. Holding him back at this stage will give him a better foundation going forward.

My daughter repeated Kindergarten. She had an overall GPA of 3.7 in college.

Absolutely hold him back. At this age he won't even care, and with his health problems he lost a lot of time in the classroom. Having his dyslexia diagnosis and holding him back will work wonders on his self esteem. Very good decision, particuarly since little boys mature later than girls anyway.

I held my 2 older boys back (July and September birthdays) and they did much better in school later. (DS3 was a March birthday so started school later.) DS1 was not diagnosed with learning problems until 5th grade and by then he had decided he was stupid. Unfortunately because he is gifted he was not far enough behind to go to special classes. I held him back and switched schools. He had a hard time because every time he managed to make good grades it frightened him and he regressed. He really didn't start to realize he was capable until high school and college. DS2 and 3 knew they had to work harder than others but were comfortable with doing that because they knew they were smart, just learned in a different way.
