Hey! We will soon be adding a goat with kids to our homestead. I have two questions

1. How does once a day milking work with dairy goats?

2. What are some Dairy friendly wormers?

Hey! Good to see you here! I thought you were getting a cow.

Milking twice a day would really be better. You can milk once a day but the goat will dry up quicker.

I'm not sure about herbal but Ivomec is ok. Some people don't even bother with withdrawal.

Hey! Good to see you too! That was the plan but we had a change of heart because of space, and things like that.

I want to milk twice a day, but I am thinking in best interest for the kids. Could I for say a month milk in the morning, then turn them in and let them nurse all day. Separate at night, milk in the morning. Then when I wean them, milk twice a day? :pop

Yes, milking once a day with kids on her is fine. Lock them up at night away from her and milk in the am. I didn't realize the kids would still be on her. I would do that for the full 8 weeks. The kids should get mom's milk for 8-12 weeks. They really do better that way.

I do the once a day every year and it works out great. The kids are separated at night - I get the morning milk and then the kids are with momma all day so I don't milk in the evening. As stated - you can do that for 8 to 12 weeks (I like to keep my kids on momma for closer to 12 weeks) and then start to milk twice a day.

I've heard of people who only milk once a day always but I'd be concerned about mastitis and the dam drying up much sooner than normal. But, I've never done it.
