One of our 5 day old mini mancha babies didnt get up this morning. when i checked her she seemed like she was breathing hard, had one eye crusted over with mucs, and her nose was full of hardened mucus (seems clear but hard to tell as it was dried).

we cleaned her up, gave her some nutri-drench, and put her in a tub alone under a heat lamp.

we couldnt tell for sure b/c of her snotty nose but it seems like she's a little wheezy in the lungs.

i have PenG Procaine - should I just give her some? she only weighs about a pound and i think the poultry dose is .5cc - does this sound about right? we usually aren't ones to rush to medicate the critters but this came on pretty sudden and maybe she had fluid in her lungs and now its pneumonia??

yesterday she was completely normal, all systems seem to be functioning (eatin' pooping peein), but i'm afraid to take her temp b/c she is so small and i dont want to hurt her with our normal sized thermometer.

any other thoughts?

thanks!

I'm not sure what the dose is for goats. I know for alpacas it is 3cc per 100 lbs. Since it is just the regular PenG, you will need to give it twice a day. I would get something into her. They can go so quickly.

If you can get a weight on a scale that would be good too. You would be surprised how much they weigh. My little Nigerian kids were all about 3 pounds when they were born. It is important to get the right amount of Pen into her.

thanks Karen!

actually i just checked her and she doesnt seem to have any more snottiness and seems to be perked up (i used your advice from an older thread that gave 3 options and 1 was to see what happens)

the new thing is that i'm not sure how much the momma is letting them nurse. in fact she kind of kicked the baby away from her and did their weird tongue licky thing that i've never seen before. then she kept walking away from the baby who was trying to nurse.

does this mean that she's rejected the baby after a couple days?? is that normal?

so we grabbed Debbie (who's now my all-star btw) and hooked the baby up to the tap. she got a big drink and her belly is full now. we put her back under the lamp.

dang. i like Nibbles but we dont have any place for a momma who wont nurse her babies.

i'm putting her on a Performance Improvement Plan, sending her to an offsite training to develop her teamwork skills, and I might just post her job!

dang goat.

Debbie got a mid-cycle review and was given an "Exceeds Expectations" and a Directors Award.

Nibbles had to wear a sign that said "This is what losers look like"

If she is a first time mom, give her some time. Sometimes they just don't totally get it the first time. Then second time around, they are mother of the year. You just have to be patient! ;)

I would keep an eye on things and see if Debbie will just take her on. There is a possibility that Nibbles doesn't have enough milk. First timers are tough sometimes. No guarantees with anything.

thanks Free and Karen! whew.. ok so my Klingon management style wont work with Nibbles. noted
;-)

Debbie is really a good sport about the whole thing, i'd love it if she took the little one. after two feedings that little one grew about 20% so i think thats what the problem was. i'll keep her under the heat lamp tonite to make sure she is warm and dry. she still didnt have any additional mucus and seems much more vigorous.

i'm off the ledge now THANKS!

I'm glad things are going better. Those little things are so cute you would just hate to lose one! :/

There are days when you wonder why the heck you are doing this and other days when it is the greatest thing in the world. Just hang in there.

you're telling me... to make it extra bad Miss Dash, my favorite little duck is setting a clutch... but i had to take up her duck eggs and replace them with chicken eggs. (we need more hens not ducks). she gave me the saddest look ever... i think i get an F- with Nibbles for being a bad mommy
:-(

but onwards and upwards

OFG, I'm going through some issues with my kids, too. I keep them under the lamp, and giving them plenty, so I'm hoping the goopy eyes and snot goes away.
