I've spent wa-a-y too much time cruisin' on sales boards lately; I would say that $400 for a basic grey mini donkey is about the average price that I've seen asked (no way of knowing if they got it! ) Colts are usually on the lower end, price-wise (because they really should be gelded) jennets with spots seem to fetch the best prices.
My donkey-owning friends tell me that you can't count on a donkey as a guard. Some do, some don't, some attack and some just bray whenever they see anything out of the ordinary. At about three feet high, this fella won't be a whole lot bigger than the goats, so he may be as vulnerable as they are should a serious predator turn up. My 32" mini mule hasn't actually attacked a dog (my goat matriarch has, several times), but she has shown an unseemly interest in stomping ducks!
I'm not trying to discourage you, just trying to be fair to the little guy. I'm hoping he turns out to be everything you want him to be (good heavens, he is a cutey, isn't he?)
